Born in Bolivia. Currently Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University.
Working on populism, democracy, and caudillo politics in the Americas, North And South.
I have a passion for trying to understand the vicissitudes of politics ever since I left Bolivia as a political refugee in my youth. This led me to Princeton University for my doctoral studies, by way of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Wesleyan University and Deep Springs College, where i first encountered the Great Authors of the Western Political Canon. My admiration for them continues, while I seek to expand Political Theory into non-Western areas. Comparative Political Theory is, in my view, the wave of the future if we are to truly understand politics.

The People's Hero Between Democracy and Populism
(Oxford University Press)
TBD: January 207, 2021
I am happy to announce that I am currently working on a book on the centrality of caudillo or strongman politics in the Americas. Using a Machiavelli-inspired framework and Latin American political thought, I argue that democracy cannot extricate itself from so-called populist forms of leadership. The American caudillo, all across the Americas, uses performance and personalism to acquire, maintain, and expand power. Sometimes for good, sometimes for ill. Populism is not an ideology, nor is it always anti-democratic. The USA can learn a lot from Latin American cases of caudillismo, especially now that Trump and Sanders are reshaping US politics.
It has gradually become clear to me what every great philosophy up till now has consisted of – namely, the confession of its originator, and a species of involuntary and unconscious autobiography; and moreover that the moral (or immoral) purpose in every philosophy has constituted the true vital germ out of which the entire plant has always grown
