My Story

Born in Bolivia. Currently Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University.

Working on the green economy, populism, and caudillo politics in the Americas, North And South.

I have a passion for trying to understand the vicissitudes of politics ever since I left Bolivia as a political refugee in my youth. This led me to Princeton University for my doctoral studies, by way of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Wesleyan University and Deep Springs College, where i first encountered the Great Authors of the Western Political Canon. My admiration for them continues, while I seek to expand Political Theory into non-Western areas. Comparative Political Theory is, in my view, the wave of the future if we are to truly understand politics.

Power over Energy: The Global Struggle for Lithium and the New Green Economy (Oxford University Press, Spring 2025)

I am happy to announce that I am currently working on a book on the new global geopolitical struggle for the green economy. Using the case of Bolivia (where I have been advising the Government since 2020), I examine local and international power competition over energy resources. I use Comparative Political Theory, Neo-Marxism and Post-Machiavellian thought to examine populism, caudillos and democracy in the attempt to secure sovereignty.
